FAQ · Gilding & Memorabilia
Can memorabilia be gilded?
Yes, many memorabilia can be gold plated or refurbished. But it's precisely for such pieces that you shouldn't just choose any coating.
A ring from the past, a pendant from the family, an old metal object or a small souvenir often has more value than the price of the material shows. If the surface looks tired, edges are worn, or the piece isn't worn the way it used to be, the real question isn't, "Can you put gold on it?"
The better question is: What solution preserves the character without making the piece seem strange or arbitrary?
Before gold plating, the following should be checked:
- what material the piece is made of
- whether there are old layers, abrasion or damage
- whether it will later be worn daily or only used occasionally
- which shade of gold suits the piece
- whether a barrier layer or special preparation makes sense
- whether reprocessing is actually the better decision
Especially with heirlooms, it's not about erasing every trace. Sometimes you want a piece to look worthy again without losing its history.
